Category: How-to Guides

Get your FaderPort working with Studio One or any DAW: connect, set up the motorized fader, map transport controls, and fix common setup problems.

Quick answer

Connect the FaderPort to a USB port, install the latest Universal Control, then enable it as a control surface in your DAW. In Studio One it is auto-detected; in other DAWs choose Mackie Control or HUI and assign the MIDI ports. Once the motorized fader responds, you can mix hands-on with over 40 key functions.

Connect and install the driver

Plug the FaderPort into a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port directly on your computer, not a hub. Install PreSonus Universal Control from the PreSonus website, then restart your computer. Open Universal Control and confirm the FaderPort appears in the device list. If you use Studio One, the controller is recognized automatically and the fader will move during startup. For other DAWs, you will add it manually in the next step.

Set up the control surface in your DAW

In Studio One, go to Studio One > Options > External Devices and verify FaderPort is listed. For Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Cubase, Reaper, or Pro Tools, add a Mackie Control or HUI device. Assign the FaderPort MIDI input and output ports exactly as shown in the Universal Control panel. Set the MIDI channel to 1 and enable the device. The motorized fader should now jump to the current track volume when you move between tracks.

Calibrate the motorized fader

FaderPort fader calibration ensures the physical position matches your DAW. In Studio One, open the FaderPort device settings and click Calibrate. Follow the on-screen prompts to move the fader through its full range. In other DAWs, use the calibration option in Universal Control. If the fader feels stiff or jumps, run calibration again after the unit has been powered on for a few minutes.

Map transport controls and buttons

The FaderPort transport controls include play, stop, record, rewind, fast-forward, and loop. In most DAWs these work immediately after you assign the control surface. For advanced mapping, open your DAW's MIDI mapping window and assign the FaderPort's buttons to specific functions like metronome, save, or undo. The 100 mm touch-sensitive fader also lets you write automation in real time by touching the cap and moving it.

FaderPort setup steps

  1. Connect and install: Plug the FaderPort directly into a USB port, install Universal Control, and restart your computer. Checkpoint: Universal Control should list the FaderPort as connected.
  2. Add control surface in DAW: In Studio One it is auto-detected; elsewhere add a Mackie Control or HUI device and assign the FaderPort MIDI ports. Mistake to avoid: selecting the wrong MIDI port or channel.
  3. Calibrate the fader: Run the calibration routine in Universal Control or your DAW's device settings. Checkpoint: The fader should move smoothly and match on-screen volume.
  4. Map transport and buttons: Use the default transport controls or assign custom functions in your DAW's MIDI mapping window. Next step: Test record, stop, and loop while playing back a session.
  5. Troubleshoot if needed: If the FaderPort is not recognized, try a different USB cable or port, reinstall Universal Control, and confirm your DAW's control surface settings. Mistake to avoid: using a USB hub that does not supply enough power.
